Sony's Columbia Pictures has picked up English-language remake rights to Sony Pictures Classics' Oscar-nominated Argentine film "Son of the Bride" as a vehicle for Adam Sandler to star in and produce through his Happy Madison Prods.
"Son," directed by Juan Jose Campanella, was nominated for the foreign language Academy Award this year. The film is about a man who has a crisis as he lives in the shadow of his father, feels guilty for not regularly visiting his aging mother or spending time with his daughter — now in the custody of his ex-wife — and cannot make a commitment to his girlfriend. A minor heart attack leads to a reunion with a childhood friend, who helps the man deal with his past and move forward.
Campanella co-wrote the original with Fernando Castets. An English-language script has yet to be written, though Sandler is likely to be involved in writing the new version. There is no director connected to the remake, but Campanella has not been ruled out as a candidate.
"Son" will reunite Sandler with the studio with which he has successfully collaborated on such features as "Big Daddy" and "Mr. Deeds." "Deeds" also is a remake of sorts as it is loosely based on "Mr. Deeds Goes to Washington." It also reunites Campanella with the studio, which released his 1998 feature "Love Walked In," starring Denis Leary and Terence Stamp.
Sandler will produce "Son" with Jack Giarraputo at their Happy Madison Prods. Columbia executive Doug Belgrad is overseeing the project, reporting to production president Peter Schlessel.
Sandler, repped by Endeavor and Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, next stars in Revolution Studios' "Punch-Drunk Love," which Columbia also will distribute. He is in production on Revolution's "Anger Management."
Campanella is repped by John Ufland at Don Buchwald & Associates and attorney Doug Stone at Stone Meyer & Genow.
