Five DBA Clients to Star in Broadway’s Legally Blonde
03/22/2007
Don Buchwald & Associates is thrilled to announce the Broadway premiere
of Legally Blonde: The Musical, starring our own Laura Bell Bundy, along with
clients Michael Rupert, Orfeh, Andy
Karl and Becky Gulsvig.
Based on the 2001 film of the same name, Legally Blonde debuted in San Francisco,
where critics raved about its “… buoyant blend of comic invention,
captivating performances, bright design and knock-‘em-dead dance numbers” (Robert
Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle). The “ever-engaging Laura Bell Bundy” (Hurwitt)
plays Elle, a deceptively smart, stiletto-heeled blonde who follows her dismissive
college boyfriend to Harvard Law School in an effort to win him back – and
proves, along the way, that even the most manicured books can’t be judged
by their covers. Bundy’s reprisal of Elle delights audiences and critics
on the west coast, and the Broadway buzz is growing.
“Laura Bell Bundy … makes the role her own,” writes Dennis
Harvery of Daily Variety. Seconds The Mercury News: “Laura Bell Bundy
nails Elle’s spunkier-than-thou vibe.” A professional actor and
DBA client since she was ten years old, Bundy is already a veteran of the stage.
In 1993 she was nominated for both an Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Award
for her work in the Off-Broadway hit Ruthless: The Musical. She honed her Broadway
chops in 2002’s Hairspray, in which she originated the role of Amber
Von Tussle, before tackling the irrepressible Glinda in Wicked.
A chanteuse with stylings as original as her name, the inimitable Orfeh, who
plays Elle’s friend and confidante Paulette, caught the eye – and
ear – of reviewers. “The single-named Orfeh stops the show…” raves
the San Francisco Chronicle. Daily Variety praises her “Fran Drescher-style
comedics,” and Richard Connema, of San Francisco’s Talking Broadway
applauds her “lilting voice,” calling her “a great asset
to the musical” and “delightful.” This marks the fourth Broadway
musical for Orfeh, a pop music sensation who started her career as lead singer
for "Or-N-More" with the number one club hit "Everyotherday"..
Tony Award winner Michael Rupert reprises the role of the villainous, “suave” Professor
Callahan, a performance that “smoothly brings down the house,” (SF
Chronicle). In his supporting role as the “walking porn” UPS man
and Paulette’s love interest, the eye-catching Andy Karl is deemed a “standout” (Daily
Variety). Rounding out the cast is Becky Gulsvig, who joins an ensemble “delightful
Greek chorus of yakety Delta Nu sisters” (Daily Variety).
Don Buchwald & Associates congratulates all of our clients on a continued
job well done.
